Fifty-seven percent. That is the prevalence of food insecurity among people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity in the United States, according to a meta-analysis published in Public Health Reports in 2025.

That prevalence is more than four times higher than the rate of food insecurity in the general US population.

More than 580,000 individuals face homelessness on any given night in the United States. Over 44 million people experience food insecurity each year.

The Salvation Army reported that 35.9 million people across the US were living in poverty in 2025, with over 2.5 million children experiencing homelessness at some point during any given year.

In Australia, a 2025 Foodbank Hunger Report found that 20% of households were severely food insecure.

The 2025 Real College Survey found that 46% of California community college students were uncertain whether they would be able to acquire nutritional food, and 58% said they could not afford to pay rent or had to move frequently.
